2017 NBA Finals: Game 5 Preview - Denied Perfection

2017 NBA Finals: Game 5 Preview - Denied Perfection

Warriors fans; being perfect sure was fun wasn’t it? I guess all good things come to an end but I had hoped this would have ended differently. I was preparing to talk the longest of shit I’ve ever talked as a Warriors fans. I had Sweeps Week t shirt ideas. You all would have hated me because I was fully prepared to start calling them the Golden State Perfects. And I don’t mean for short term, I’m talking about for the rest of my life. I’m supposed to be at a parade right now. Or maybe it would have been yesterday, either way I’m not even supposed to be at work. I feel we will close it out tonight, but in the words of my boy @Flyassmill, “16-1 just doesn’t sound as sexy”. I didn’t want to be that fan that only drops an article when we win so I’ve got a few takes in regards to this loss.

The Warriors came out flat. End of story. Yes, 30 total free throws taken in the 1st quarter of the game slowed down the style of basketball the Warriors like to play. Quick fouls on our star players made it so that we couldn’t play as physical of a game as the Cavs were allowed to. That’s not why we lost, though. Steph didn’t get his first buckets until the very end of the 1st quarter. That is just unacceptable. Even if the other team is being physical I’d like to think a player like Steph can manage to get more than a bucket or two by the end of one quarter. There were also a lot of blown defensive assignments all across the board for the Warriors. The Cavs saw a lot of open looks and capitalized off of damn near every one of them. The Cavs hit a record number of threes and the role players all stepped up when called upon. The Warriors also couldn’t get a rebound to save their lives. I think a small part of the Warriors thought the Cavs would just lie down and die. Meanwhile, Bron was probably in the locker room writing out pink slips in his office in the Cavs locker room. The thought of being swept out of the Finals was all the motivation the Cavaliers needed. This is somewhat crazy to me as the Finals themselves didn’t seem to be enough motivation for the defending champions. Regardless, I give credit to the Cavs for making the necessary adjustments and denying my favorite team greatness.

The Warriors now find themselves in familiar territory; up 3-1 with a closeout Game 5 at home. Things are a lot different in this particular Game 5 though. This year, the Warriors will have Draymond, the heart and soul of this Warriors team. He remembers being denied the opportunity to play in this game last year. I believe that all of the Warriors players want to win it in front of the fans this year. Maybe they threw the game in order for the Warriors to make more money at home, increase the salary cap to accommodate Curry and Durant’s upcoming contracts and to win it all in front of the fans. Light years I tell you, light years. I expect Steph to have one of those Steph like games tonight. I’ve got a feeling he’s going to have a legendary Finals performance and drop 40. I’m secretly hoping that he does because it was still close in regards to who would win Finals MVP up until KD hit that big shot in Game 3. In all honesty I don’t care if they decided to give the Finals MVP Award to David West, I just want to see my boys win another championship. The stage is set perfectly for them to do so.

Lastly, I’d like to say welcome to the playoffs to “Cavs fans” and Warriors haters alike. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a few of your faces on the TL. I even had a Cavs fan not tweet after the Cavs Game 2 loss, didn’t see him at all during the entire Game 3 yet had to read my mentions at the end of Game 4. The way he was talking you would have thought the Cavs just tied up the series. I guess he was mustering up the courage during his 4 day hiatus but it is quite possible (more than likely not) that he was truly just too busy to tweet. In addition to people finally being able to empty some of their drafts in regards to the Warriors, I saw quite a few Dubs fans in a panic. I’m not exactly sure why. We’ve lost 2 games since March. We are now in the month of June. Trust me, no one wanted to see perfect more than I did but I’m not at all worried about this series. I hope to see some lineups that include Zaza Pachulia not stepping foot on the basketball floor. Sorry man, you’ve done well up to this point but you are beginning to reach Andy V territory as far as my patience is concerned. Javele McGee needs starting minutes and there is no reason at all that both KD and Steph should be sitting at the same time. Steve Kerr is relying far too much on this whole strength in numbers thing like McAdoo is going to care whether or not he plays this game as long as he’s got another ring. I think Kerr needs to grind his stars to the ground and close this out. There is no time to play around at this point. Get it done!
