Film Review: Bad Santa 2

Film Review: Bad Santa 2

In 2003 there was a Christmas movie released titled Bad Santa starring Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox and Bernie Mac, at first I thought this would be a PG-13 Christmas movie just based off the commercials, but when it was released, the movie was like no other, we got a Santa that doesn't give a single fuck, drinks until his liver is gone, and a certified criminal along with his partner Marcus. Fast forward to 2016 we have Bad Santa 2, this was supposed to be released sometime in 2011 but scripts kept changing and other things, but now we finally have it, is it the sequel that we all wanted or is it just some bullshit? This might surprise some people but it’s actually a pretty damn good sequel for it to be 10+ years in the making. To be honest I think this was the perfect time to release Bad Santa 2 for one reason, Therman Merman, If BS2 would have came out 2 years after the first we would have seen a repetitive role in the kid Therman Merman still getting bullied and asking stupid yet simple ass questions annoying the shit out of Willie, this time he's 21 years old and he's working at a sandwich fast food place but he's still the annoying Therman just grown up. The last time we seen Willie in the Santa outfit he was riddled with 8 bullets in his ass by the cops trying to escape and run inside the house (no way that shit happens in real life by the way) Now he's back with his short friend Marcus after 1 phone call about a job he has planned in Chicago to rob the Santa donation company, what he doesn't know is that his mother is in so now it's Willie, Marcus and Willie's mother portrayed by Kathy Bates. You can easily spot out the good and the bad about this movie but there's more good in this one, you still Willie and Marcus hating each other's guts, Willie still has a soft spot for Therman Merman no matter how many times he cusses him out, it's almost like a father and son bond, Therman isn't in the movie too much until around the 3rd act is getting ready to start, and Willie is still the eating, drinking, shitting, fucking Santa. This isn't the typical sequel which is kind of interesting they could have easily had Willie and Marcus just go back to Phoenix or another city and rob the mall again and tried to have another manager stop them, I'm glad we didn't get that, yes it's still has the same elements as the first but it's a different story and different heist. That's what the Bad Santa franchise really is, a dark comedy Christmas heist film.

There isn't too much bad about this film but it does kind of drag a little, maybe they could have saved a couple scenes as deleted scenes for the Blu-ray and of course it was missing (Rest in Peace) Bernie Mac but we know what happened to his character and him in real life, but it would have been nice to have a character simular to have. Kathy Bates didn't bother me as much as people said, some of her lines were kind of forced but it wasn't a big deal, she had a good role as Willie's mother. Bad Santa 2 is really good, it's not that "piece of shit" sequel that was "rushed" even though it's been 10+ years, it's not bad at all unless you're expecting some Oscar type movie, Bad Santa 2 just as funny as the first, rumors are floating that a 3rd film could happen and it may take place in Vegas, if you're going to do a 3rd Bad Santa and end it off as a trilogy, why not do it in Las Vegas where Willie and Marcus try to rob a casino, they could even get Therman in the action this time around. If they do start on a 3rd film, they going to have to start development now because these guys are getting older and we can't wait over 5 years for this one, other than that I hope Bad Santa 2 makes it's money at the box office, it was overshadowed by a lot of releases this Thanksgiving. I'm giving Bad Santa 2 an 8/10 just by sticking to the same formula with a new setting and keeping the same tone as the first, and hopefully we get that unrated/director's cut Blu-ray really soon.
