Follow Your Heart - a poem

Follow Your Heart - a poem

follow your heart

they said, it

will lead you to places you’d never dream

you’d go, follow your heart

they said, but

they must have been talking about a

different kind of heart because this one

keeps leading me into arms attached to cold hands,

heavy

hands

calloused

hands

hands that bruise

hands that won’t let go, follow your heart

they said, it

will lead you into sanctuaries built for

worshipping you, follow your heart

they said, but

they must have been talking about a

different kind of heart because this one

seems to be running in circles, in and

out of him, and i find myself

pressed up against the walls of the rooms he

built to hide himself in, his

insecurities separated by color

red for rage, for the times this heart

attempted to escape him

black for pain, for the times this heart

attempted to escape him

yellow for delusion, for

the times this heart mistakenly referred to

possession as friendship, follow your heart

they said, it

will lead you towards healing, follow

your heart, they said

but they must have been talking about

a different kind of heart because

this one

keeps leading me back to

you
