Let's End The Hov/Drake "Debate"

Let's End The Hov/Drake "Debate"

For a while now, there have been discussions, debates, comparisons, whatever you want to call it, about Jay-Z and Drake. These two rappers are both great, don’t get it fucked up, but Jay-Z has been in the game way longer and has solidified his mark as being mentioned in the typical top 5. With 16 studio albums alone I feel Jay-Z shouldn’t even be mentioned with Drake as who is better. I know numbers don’t mean much because you can put out 20 projects and nobody will give a fuck about it. What matters is what’s said in these projects and how they affect the people who listen to them. Jay-Z has time and time again changed how people view rap and how it’s more to this than just rapping (he didn’t name his album The Blueprint for no reason).  Along with those 16 albums he’s put other rappers on that have signed to him by helping them showcase their rap skills on certain songs not to mention a whole ass album for the Roc-A-Fella team called The Dynasty: Roc La Familia.

Drake on the other hand, hasn’t even reached the surface as far as being on the level of Jay-Z and I don’t think he can or even wants to honestly. When he dropped his song Fear, he said, “I never cried when Pac died, but I probably will when Hov does” and when Light Up dropped featuring Jay where he basically gave Drake the game in a 16. Off of those two songs alone, Drake can’t say that he’s on top cause Jay-Z is his teacher, if anything.  With only 4 studio albums how can he even be compared by the masses that he’s #1? Also, they are in two different categories as far as their music goes. Drake isn’t a street dude and that’s ok. He has his style of rapping and singing which has been his formula since he’s started and I say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Just don’t say you’re the best and haven’t done most of what the best has done, it doesn’t work like that.

I’m just trying to figure out when this was even up for discussion that these two are in the same league for comparison. To me, this is like a Jordan and Curry debate, two different generations of players, but because of how great they both are I guess it gives the people something to talk about cause nothing can never just be what it is in the time being. Back to Hov and Drake though…two different styles of rap and two different generations, which in this case voids any discussion between them. Jay-Z was great for the time he was in his prime with the older generation and Drake is great for the time he’s in his prime for this generation. No question that Drake isn’t the top dog for people who are 22 and under (if you aren’t a fan this doesn’t apply) that don’t know much about Jay and what he’s done for rap. There really isn’t a bigger influence alive right now than Jay-Z. The Toronto rapper definitely comes in 2nd, BUT he is no Hov, just doesn’t make sense.

People wanted Views (I’m not the least bit mad at how the album turned out by the way) to be more aggressive, but when has a Drake album/mixtape ever been about being thoroughly aggressive, coming for niggas necks and applying pressure like he’s king of this shit? I will say that very few are touching Drake’s flow now, he never made Nigga What, Nigga Who though which is one of Jay’s best songs showcasing his flow. Also, not many are even challenging Drake like people did Hov and all that extra competition helped him be who he is today. Meek doesn’t count cause we all know that was very one sided and a waste of all of our time. Kendrick tried, but the guy from the 6 didn’t want that smoke with him (which is understandable). Anyone who came at Hov, he addressed that shit on his albums with no problems showing that he can talk that talk and back it up when needed.

Personally, I don’t think Drake will ever be the tough guy rapper everyone wants him to be. He has people writing for him and reference tracks that I don’t care too much about cause Drake makes great music regardless. How can it even be possible for him to come for the crown though? There is no proof of writers for Jay, all we know is he does all this shit off the top of the dome. In the end, no matter what anyone says, Drake will always be #2 and Hov will always be The GOAT. He hasn’t put in enough time yet to be #1 in the rap game. So is Drake the best that this generation has seen with the 8 years he’s put into this? Yes. Is he better than Jay-Z who’s had a question & answer for the fans that’s said what he’s done for them musically and how he constantly motivates them to want to do better in life itself? No.  All in all it’s no need to have a discussion on who is better, the proof is all in the music and what that music has done for people worldwide. What more can I say???
