Film Review - John Wick: Chapter 2
"Somebody PLEASE get this man a gun!"
Back in 2014, John Wick was one of most slept on movies released, coming out around the same time as The Equalizer, John Wick didn't catch the general public's eye until later. John Wick and The Equalizer are not the same movies, action wise you can probably compare but other than that they're just both franchises that have potential to be the best at what they bring to the big screen. Fast forward to 2017 we now have John Wick Chapter 2, Keanu Reeves is back as the "retired" assassin/hitman and this time he isn't playing around, after rightfully so getting revenge on the punks who killed his dog in the first installment. He finally finds his car from the first movie and makes peace with an old enemy, this time he's forced to do a mission if he would like to stay retired, but the mission is to kill Santino D'Antonio's sister who has a seat at the high table that he desperately wants.
John did not want to go back into the killing life until Santino blows his house up and all hell breaks loose from there, and this is where John Wick really shines. The action in John Wick Chapter 2 is too damn good, I mean really fucking good, the action sequences are at least 5 times better than its predecessor, if you enjoy classic brutal action films like John Woo's Hard-Boiled, The Raid and Raid 2, then you'll definitely love this film, it's amazing how John Wick can get stabbed, shot, tossed down some steps and still be able to kill 150 people with ease (majority with headshots). Another great part about this franchise is the story of John Wick, the first film introduced us to who he was, and why he was lured back into the assassin life, Chapter 2 gives us some of the answers we want and takes us deep into the world of the assassins and the great Continental hotel. When John travels to Rome we see the Continental like never before, this just goes to show you that when the 3rd Wick film is made, we're going to see worldwide killers, but the Continental is more than just a hotel, and we seen that in the first film, but this time around we see where John gets his suits from and all his weapons he needs to finish the job.
Watching this movie you can tell John doesn't want to kill people anymore, he has a "marker" with his blood in it to get out of the assassin life but he was forced to kill the D'Antonio sister, now the game has changed, with a $7 million contract on his head, John has nobody to help him except Laurence Fishburne himself, Laurence has an unbelievably underground organization of hitmen, he has bums on almost every street corner of New York keeping their eyes and ears open, and to be honest, Wick is going to need these Lawrence and his operation for Chapter 3. Why is he going to need their help? Well after breaking the rules and killing someone on the high table at "company grounds" aka the Continental, it's basically John Wick vs. the world LITERALLY, and he has 1 hour get wherever he needs to go, and this is where 3 will get interesting, John does have a marker left, and he still has his guns and coins that he's going to have to dig up from his destroyed home that's buried underground. John Wick Chapter 2 is the sequel we all been waiting for, the action is better and it gets straight to the point without dragging, if Chapter 3 is as great as 2 is, John Wick has the potential to be one of the greatest trilogies in Hollywood, and really I think the movies should stop at 3, as much as I would love to see more Wick movies, it would kind of be "milking the franchise" but who knows, if it turns out great off the action alone, I wouldn't care how many they made. The cast in this film was also cool, Common was really good for his role, Ruby Rose was ok and you'll definitely see some familiar faces from 1. I seen John Wick Chapter 2 three times already and I think I'm going to see it again, so far it's one of my favorite films of 2017, this movie is perfect to me, but I do think I speak for everyone when I say I was expecting a scene where John's pit bull eats somebody up, maybe in the next one, I can wait another 2-3 years for another sequel; as long as it's right and the action is there!
I'm giving John Wick Chapter 2 a 10/10; yes it's that damn good!!
