BK Nets: We Gon' Be...Alright?
I know you’re going to read this and assume that I must be high off the Angel Dust that had Smokey hiding in the pigeon coop, but hear me out. I like what the Nets are trying to do, seriously. Sean Marks has ALL my trust. He already had a pass from me going into this season considering he was starting from scratch attempting to turn this franchise around with little to no assets. It was painful watching the Boston Celtics make a selection with what should have been our 3rd pick. Thank you Billy King. And as we all know, we won’t have our own first round picks for the next two seasons as well. Thank you Billy.
Sean Marks is out here trying to turn nothing into something and I think he will do it sooner than everyone thinks. I was sad to see my guy Thad Young go but I wasn’t mad at the move. We made a risky move trading him to the Pacers for the 20th pick and drafting Caris LeVert who is coming off serious foot surgery. I didn’t know much about this kid but after doing my Googles and Youtube searches, I’m excited about what we got. A 6’7 combo guard that can defend, shoot the 3 and has great court vision. Very interested in seeing LeVert, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson & Chris McCullough(both in sophomore years) grow together.
To add to the little bit of excitement I have, we were actually able to draft the player I’d hope we get with our second round pick. We made a trade with the Utah Jazz to move up a few picks to scoop up the hometown kid, Isaiah Whitehead. LIIIIIIIT! I think he’s going to shock a lot of people as the years go by. He’s been doing his thing in the Summer League already. I think Coach Kenny Atkinsonwho is known for his development of point guards, will mold the young dipper dapper into a good rotational player. Maybe even something more than that. I think he has the potential to be a killer on the court. Time will tell.
A good sign to me is that restricted free agents Allan Crabbe and Tyler Johnson actually signed our offer sheets. I was disappointed when both offers were matched but it showed me that there was young talent out there interested in playing for Brooklyn and this new thing we got going. Very encouraging sign to me. Players around the league may be noticing the culture change.
We got Jeremy Lin to come to Brooklyn on a reasonable contract. Signed him for 36 million of them thangs for 3 years. Not mad at it. Last time he linked up with Coach Atkinson, it was on the Knicks and we couldn’t escape Linsanity. I’m definitely not saying he will perform that way on a nightly basis here in Brooklyn but I know he will do pretty well. I know he’ll be better than bum ass Deron Williams was for sure. I think Jeremy Lin is going to finally get the fans at Barclay’s Center to be live and energized most nights and I’m looking forward to it. Really intrigued to see how he connects with Brook Lopez. Brook started to elevate his game to another level in the second half of last season and while playing with the worst point guard rotation in the league. Can’t wait to see where he’s at this season and how this Brook-Lin combo pans out. Should be fun.
Sean Marks is doing his best to change the culture in Brooklyn. With the addition of Trevor Booker, whose game I like, I see Marks is trying to build a team that’s tough and gritty. Additions of Greivis Vasquez & Luis Scola should help with the development of the young guys and give us a little more depth than we had last season. At the moment I project an enjoyable low 30-win season. Until there are other moves made, I’m content watching these young guys run up and down the court getting that experience. Might have a few greys poke out the scalp but fuck it.
The Cavs and the Warriors are clear cut favorites to win the title so wasting money on the vets available this summer would have been foolish of us. Save that money, develop the young fellas and let’s see what happens next off-season.
Oh yeah, If the Celtics end up with Blake Griffin or Russell Westbrook by dealing our picks, Billy King is going to have to pick a box and shoot me the fair one!
