Fiction Series: Don't Be A Shenanigan - Part 1

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” & what I mean by that is that it’s back to school season. I’m riding down the E-way (expressway) blasting Future x Maceo “Back at it” as a sign to show that the boy is back in Xavier City and ready to turn my junior year up a notch. I’m coming fresh off a crazy, eye opening summer which included manifesting my dreams of working in film& production while dealing with an unexpected situation between Shaina & I all while still coming to terms with the aftermath of the fall out between Jazmine & I. It was nothing but moneymaking, dream chasing, girl facing, & summer night playing. Even though it was another year spent away from home aka the South District, I still kept in touch with the family throughout the good, bad, & ugly. I said that to say, even though another year of summer was in the books, I was anxious to start a new semester. Third times a charm. While riding & enjoying the scenary passing through Lake Ponochula, I get a call through my bluetooth in the car from my homie Trell, who already settled into our apartment for the school year. “Aye where you at my nigga,?” he asked me. I replied back, “Im pulling into the city within the next 30 minutes or so. I should be on campus by 8” Trell then said, “Cool. G, its a couple of us already here pregaming for the Kappa Luau.” I replied back “Oh ok. I’ma be there in a minute.” As soon as the convo ended, the music cut back on and I start to haul ass to the school. While driving, I passed through downtown Xavier and couldn’t help but think about home and how beautiful our skyline is, but that’s a different subject for another day. I’m getting off the exit and driving over the hump. The closer I get to the school, the more people I’m seeing heading over to the Kappa house for the Luau. A couple of mutual friends & classmates recognized me as I was passing through the front of campus to turn into the strip. I stopped real quick & said what’s up’s to couple of folks as I was driving to the back. A couple of them were from back home and they had asked me why I haven’t came back home in so long. I hate answering this question because i don’t really have a good answer for that. It almost been 3 years since i was back home (home meaning the South District). But I told them that I’m planning on coming back real soon. I cut the conversation short because I needed to get to the back of campus before housing closes down early and I’m stuck with out my key. When I arrive to the back of campus i catch housing staff at that last second and made sure to get my key for my place. I found out we were all staying in the 100’s building on the first floor. I parked my car and got some of my things to my room. As I walked in to my apartment, I was greeted by a couple of the homies & girls who were already there pre-gaming for the Luau. I put my stuff down and unlocked my door to the room on the far right & greeted everybody in the room. Trell then asked me, “Aye you need some help with getting the rest of your stuff out the car before we head to this party?” I replied back, “Yeah that would be cool g. I don’t have too much left to get anyways.” We went back to get the last of my things & settle into my room. The rest of my stuff was in storage & I decided i was going to get it sometime this weekend. . After we came back into the room and I made my bed up real quick, I threw on my red low-top chuck taylor shoes to replace my Nike slides and we made our way to the party. We all rode two cars deeps back to the front Luckily we found parking that wasn’t too far out for us. Everybody in the group was drinking except for me. I didn’t feel like getting on liquor tonight because I was slick tired from road running it all day from the West District to campus. We get to the party and explored the scene, which looked real reminiscent of a beach house party, where most of the girls there were in their bikinis dancing & having a good time, while the kappas were strolling,  & also giving everybody in the back of the house some Nupe juice. And them you have some of the hood boogers & locals posted, whether they went to school at Xavier or were just apart of the surrounding neighborhood. While at the party, Jon and Trell had told me about the plans for tomorrow night. It looks like we were going to this new spot called “Shenanigans.” Its was off Cape Town road in the downtown area. I’m not even going to lie but when I first heard about that name, I laughed my ass off because I never heard the name of a club like that before ever. “Wait so you mean to tell me that there’s actually a club called Shenanigans?,” I asked as I was laughing hard. Jon smiled and says to Trell, “Bruh don’t even know it dawg.” Trell responded to Jon, “Oh CJ going to know. Whole gang going to know after tomorrow night g. Don’t sleep. on that my guy” All that can come to my mind is that with a name like that for a club, it sounded like it was a disastrous good time waiting to happen. The funny thing was that just as soon as the guys brought it up to me, one of the promoters at the party had came to us and passed us the flyers that just so happen to promote for the party tomorrow night. Apparently this is going to be the new Friday nightspot. I say that term real loosely because every semester there’s always a new party spot for us to go to, whether the spot is really brand new or has a new name from the old spot. Last school year…Empire was the wave. I mean, technically it still is but I’ve heard stories about Shenanigans over the summer from a few homies of mine. What really caught my attention for Shenanigans was the 5 for 1 happy hour special they’re promoting. I was looking at the flyer and look to the guys and say, “5 for 1 drinks? On momma nem grave bro?” The guys give me that look that indicated to me “Nigga” & by nigga, I mean “YES BRUH” By that moment, I was sold. I told them that we’ll talk more about this in the morning. We partied into the night. Sometime after the party ended, the whole campus was still popping. Nobody wanted to go in yet for the night. Some folks ended up going to the club while the rest just stayed out and fooled around on campus. We ended up messing around on campus a bit while everybody else was kicking it. I ended up ending the night by getting in the whip with Dre & Jon to drive to McDonalds to get a quick bite to eat.

The next morning as i was sleeping, my phone starts to ring. ’I’m struggling to wake up and see who it was calling me so early. When I look at the phone ID, it just so happens to be my homegirl Maria from the West District. I had thought she was just checking in on me because we had talked right before I left for school. However, I find out that her and her two friends, Larissa & Sheri were in town for the weekend. I asked her what brought her out here and she told me it was because she wanted to spend time with her boyfriend. Some of her sorority sisters just so happened to be in the area as well so she felt it was a good excuse to kill two birds with one stone. I told her that we can sneak them into Josephine Cafe and kick it with us for a second. Right after I got off the phone with Maria, I get a knock at the door. I go and open the door to see my homie D-Will. He lets me know that the homies were getting ready to head to the cafe and asked if i wanted to come with them. i told him that I’ll get dressed in a bit. I threw on a white tee and some long black Jordan shorts, with my nike slides on. I got myself together, went to Trell, Jon & the guys room. we all head out to the cafe after everyone got ready. As we pulled up to Josephine’s, Maria hit my line and asked where I was. I told her we were just pulling up to the cafe right now. Maria says, “Don’t go anywhere yet because we’re pulling up too. Where can we park so it won’t be so obvious to get ticketed by campus police?” I told her to park in the back by the ROTC building. They hardly ever check over there. When everybody parked and got settled, we managed to sneak the girls in the cafe, got our food, and settled onto our big table to talk politics and our Friday Night plans. We were talking about everything we did over the summer, asking the girls different questions about their lives since it was the homies first time meeting them, etc. While in midst of conversation, my homeboy Renae asked Trell about Shenanigans. Trell explained, “Shenanigans is this big ass spot in downtown. Its like a bar/restaurant /club rolled into one. It just was formed over this summer while Jon & I was in summer school. When i tell you that spot is so serious my nigga. Look Bro” “Jon then chimed in and said, “Our first time we went there over summer for the 5 for 1 drinks, we barely made it back to campus g. I don’t know what in the hell they put in them drinks, but it was definitely strong enough to get any person out of character.“ My homeboy Travis replied, “it couldn’t be worse than Jaguar Land dawg. Couldn’t be.. No way.” I followed up saying, “I mean Jaguar Land has left us with quite a few blurry memories g. You sure about that hype for Shenanigans?” Jon then said, “Shenanigans is dead ass on some next level type shit. its hard for me to explain it to you. This is something you would need to experience for yourself.” We didn’t know what to expect but we were intrigued about this new spot. . Larissa then asked Trell, “Ok so what time would we need to be over there to catch the 5 for 1 drinks?” He said, “Well happy hour start a 5 & goes on for each hour. Each hour, the drinks decrease & it from 5 for 1 to 4 for 1 to 3 for 1 & 2 for one. Its definitely a party but it doesn’t start for real until 9. Its already a party once the drinks kick in, but the more you drink the quicker time goes and quicker your memory could possibly fade away” “Shit if all of this true with what you’re saying, then my niggas, tonight is about to go up,” I said. Then Maria turns to Larissa and says, “Hoe you better not tap out like you did last time when we was with CJ.” Larissa shot back and said, “ bitch YOU better not tap out. Remember that was YOUR birthday we was celebrating. Wasn’t the only one that tapped lil nigga.” We all had started laughing at the table. Sheri then says, “Y’all always on it with this shit. Chill out. Both y’all going to get sauced up tonight either way. Just don’t get that ass lost in the sauce like last time.” I laughed and said, “Yeah that was a lit ass time we all had over summer.”

After finishing our conversation we left from the cafe and went our separate ways. The girls ended up coming to the back with me and helped me with putting the final touches of putting my room together. I must say they laced the boy up real good because my room was looking real good & hella like a bachelor pad. After they left the spot, I continued to get my room together & go to storage to pick up the rest of my belongings for my room. As the days came to pass & it was almost time for the shenanigans to start, we all started to get ready. I had decided to rock my Grey Tommy Hilfiger Tee, with some Baby blue straight leg 501 Levi’s & my Fresh out the box Air Pippen 6’s. Everybody was getting dressed and ready while I was in the living room with some of the homies. Even though we were engaging in conversation. I couldn’t help but think about what Trell and Jon told me about Shenanigans. I had this gut feeling about the spot. Normally when I have a gut feeling like this current one now, it always ends up being right. I can already see some wild and crazy shit happening tonight on our first night out in Xavier city. But as a great legend once said, “Big time players make big time plays” Once everybody was ready, we rode out Shenanigans. Jon and I ended up driving 2 cars deep with the homies. The mood for tonight was Future’s classic that we call “Monster.” It represented that gut feeling I had in my stomach. Don’t ask me why it represents that but its the closest feeling that I have.

While driving down on the expressway, Jon decides that he wanted race me when he drive off. When I saw his pathetic attempt, I laughed and then hit the accelerator and passed him the hell up doing 80. Right when I passed him up, that’s when i saw the exit and literally had to hit the brakes to get off the exit and find the spot. It was still very early, but it looked like a decent crowd was in the building. From the outside in after we parked, it definitely looked like a whole nightclub from the outside. After getting checked and patted up by security, everybody walked into the party. I took notice to the setting of the club as i walked in. I saw two bars, one by the middle of the dance floor and the one all the way right across. the opposite end. I saw all the chairs and tables all around with the center stage smacked dab in between the seating area. I was feeling the club set up. I was amazed to see a line form on the other side of the room. I looked to see what & why they were in line only to find out that they were serving food. When I tell you my ass hopped into the line with a swiftness man. I knew I had to get some food, especially with all of this drinking were about to do. A lot of us had already secured our table nearby. As we were all heading towards the bar, Maria told us that she got a couple of their homegirls out here from the north that’s about to pull up in a few and my niggas started to ask them if the girls was fine. Maria laughed and said, “I always keep a group of em by me. Ask CJ he knows.” She looked at me and then I gave my homies the nod, insinuating that she wasn’t lying at all. We then got our first rounds of drinks. Everybody each got different multiple mixed drinks they were selling from blue motherfuckers to long islands to Hennessy and Coke. Each drink was different from the rest. I still couldn’t believe it as I was starring at my 5 drinks bought with $8 dollars. It almost felt like a crazy dream come true “My nigga we really out here walking around with 5 drinks g. And we only had to drop $8 for it too?” Renae said to me. I told him, “We have a long night ahead of us my dude. This is a Marathon, Not a Sprint my brother.” We said our first “cheers” and killed our first set of drinks. As we were drinking and conversing, Marie’s pulled up to the table. The girls all greeted and hugged Marie, Larissa, & Sherie as if they haven’t seen them in years. Everybody introduces themselves to one another and immediately got into the mix. The girls were all cool and cute too just like Maria told us. After getting we all made our way to the bar to get more drinks. After each round, it was slowly turning into a party within our crew. The DJ was currently playing “Broccoli” from Dram & Lil Yatchy, which was setting the tone up for the night. The drinks didn’t kick in yet, but I could tell that the energy was changing amongst us & it was clear everybody was feeling it. I looked away to look at the scene around me to see more people coming in & the bar getting more fast paced. By the time I turn around, somehow someway, Black Hennessy bottle just magically appear to the whole entire table. It was almost as if the universe was reciprocating the energy that we were giving towards our surroundings. We all poured up a shot & toasted up with the chant to carry us onto the night, “Up to it, Down to it. Fuck those who don’t do it. We do it cause we used to it. No drink mufucka drink.” and we downed out shots in the second. I’m looking around and seeing all my friends enjoying themselves and soak in the energy. Of owning the night. I blinked for a moment & then went black.

The next morning I wake up face down on the couch & was like “BRO WHAT IN THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?”
