Tell The Poet - a poem

Tell The Poet - a poem

If you see the poet

Show him my new photographs

Give him my new number

Tell him I know of a quiet place

He can create

He can wander

Tell him I’m the one

Still visiting in his daydreams

The one standing in the corner

The one he’s been growing towards

But could never reach

Tell him I’m ready now

Tell him he can write for me

If you see the poet

Show him these words

Fill him in on my story

Tell him he has permission

I’ll let my guard down this time, I promise

His old notebooks can be discarded

Tell him his love was misplaced

And the way she left was fucked up

Tell him I'm sorry

Tell him I’m wild and unkempt

But I'll let him write for the kid

This time I’ll tell him everything

I won’t leave out one thing that I did

Oh, the stories he could tell

The places I would see

Dripping slowly off of his pencil

Staining each and every sheet

I’d make my home in his notebook

Oh, the secrets we would keep

Tell him I still believe in nights becoming mornings

Ask him if he still believes in me

Tell him I still have faith in our friendship

And I miss waking up to his warmth

Tell him I’d stay forever

Tell him longer if he needs more

Pressed up against his back

I’ll protect him

I’ll guard his work

Tell him I’m still not perfect

But he can write for me

In ways he never wrote for her

Please, next time you see the poet

Promise you will do this one thing

Tell him I wasn't ready before

But I am now and

He can write for me.
