The Truth About: Chris Paul

The Truth About: Chris Paul

“Got a Chris Paul mind state, I’m never out of bounds…” – Lil’ Wayne (he was dead serious btw)

I like Wayne; I talk shit about him because I think he’s grossly overstated due to how many bad performances he’s had on songs. I love Chris Paul, I think he’s grossly understated because of how many bad performances his teammates have had in the playoffs; not to mention his teams have had some shit for luck. While I certainly understand that the general public holds superstars accountable for their team’s misfortunes, I’m also not a child and know that basketball is a team sport; we need to stop equating individual success to team success or lack thereof. “The team goes as ___ goes” is a load of bullshit and now I’ll tell you the truth about Chris Paul.

Jason Kidd is my favorite point guard ever and I also believe he’s the best point guard ever. Someone once asked me, “If you substitute CP3 for Kidd on the New Jersey teams that went to back to back finals, how good would they be?” I was beside myself because how dare you compare anyone to Jason Kidd? I went on to belittle CP3 and his game because I am such a staunch J. Kidd guy but I’ve found myself. I was doing what most people do in debates and discussions about their favorites; not thinking logically. I completely disparaged CP3 based on a hypothetical that I know will never exist because truth be told, CP3 is a top 5 point guard in NBA history.

Look at the Hornet teams this man played on; please tell me who his teammates were…you back from Google yet? I take nothing away from David West he’s my type of power forward, hit an elbow jumper and elbow you in the chest after grabbing a rebound; I like that shit. However, make no mistake about it; that was a CP3 team and he actually abused Jason Kidd in the 2008 playoffs. Maybe that’s where my sour grapes stem from, Chris Paul was yelling in Jason Kidd’s face bucket after bucket, “HE CAN’T GUARD ME!” I did the Jay-Z in the studio with Kanye face from Fade to Black. As much as I recognize basketball is a team sport, CP3 eliminated the Mavs in 5 that year. That same playoff run, the Hornets pushed San Antonio to 7 games because CP3 was giving Tony Parker all the drugs but the Spurs proved to be a better team. Also, I have to mention how that Hornets team & specifically CP3 helped lift the spirit of New Orleans after the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina; sports is a lot of things and emotional is certainly one of them.

know some of you are thinking, “Tyson Chandler was on that team!” Well, I don’t rock with Tyson Chandler like that for a few reasons but I’ll keep it basketball for now. I’m a Knicks fan, that’s no secret; we got Tyson Chandler after we used our amnesty on Chauncey Billups and he won defensive player of the year, we made the playoffs, made it out the 1st round and then he let Roy Hibbert, read carefully ROY HIBBERT take his soul and he was never the same again. When in reality, the “plan” was to wait and sign CP3 to the Knicks and we’d have something he haven’t had since Mark Jackson/Rod Strickland and that’s a point guard who is coveted by other teams. So I blame Tyson Chandler (although we all know it was James Dolan) for Chris Paul not being a Knick. Wait, it gets better, you know the Lakers right? The team who, along with the Celtics, put the NBA on the proverbial map in the 1980’s. You know the Lakers, the team that drafted Magic Johnson number 1 in 1979 & James Worthy number 1 in 1982 when they already had this guy who would eventually be the all-time scoring leader in NBA history, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You know the Lakers, the team that got Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown (nobody knew what Marc Gasol was, save it) from the former Laker player & general manager (also antiquated logo of the NBA) Jerry West, who convinced a teenage Colorado Kob that he should only be a Laker. The same Colorado Kob who was threatening to leave the Lakers if they didn’t make a move; you can see his disgust over learning they refused to trade Bynum for Jason Kidd. Do we see the pattern? The Lakers are America’s team and the NBA played Donald Trump, “Make the Lakers Great Again” until…David “I do what I want to do, I don’t care if I get caught, The DA can play this motherfucking tape in court” Stern said “NOPE!” on the trade that would have sent CP3 to the Lakers. What a glorious day that was and Laker fans HAHAHAHAHAHA.

So now CP3 makes his way to the Clippers, Blake, DeAndre, Doc Rivers and them. Blake Griffin has shit for luck. DeAndre Jordan, for all his defensive prowess, might be the worst offensive center I’ve seen since Jerome James.  You know the rest of the characters, Crawford (who I love), JJ Reddick (who we all see has improved) but then what? I like Jeff Green and appreciate his story but is this the guy to help get over the hump in the West? There are no excuses here, you play with who you play with but if they aren’t better than who the other teams have, I can’t place blame or call you names. I called CP3 a “loser” on Twitter to prove a point about Carmelo Anthony and how we are too quick to label players because of the lack of team accomplishments.

Look at Chris Paul’s numbers 19ppg 10apg 4rpg 2spg in the regular season, 21ppg 9apg 5rpg 2spg in the playoffs. And CP3 does something a lot of fans forget about; he plays great fucking defense! On the ball, in the passing lanes, off the ball chasing guards off the screens; he’s a disruptive force on defense. Do you understand how important a first line of defense is? CP3 literally has no holes in his game; he is the mold of which all future point guards should aspire to be. I just pray he doesn’t come to the Knicks when it’s too late.

Speaking of Knicks transactions, next week I tell the truth about the current guy in charge Phil “I talk like a pimp, walk like a mack” Jackson. It’s time!
