The Truth About: Kevin Durant

The Truth About: Kevin Durant

“People have rules and guidelines for everyone’s happiness but their own.” – Mal

Remember the Seattle Supersonics? Remember how they left Seattle? I’m not big on karma but Kevin Durant leaving Oklahoma City scot-free feels like a bitch (to people in OKC). KD doesn’t owe anyone an explanation or a hug; he made his decision for himself, that’s enough of a reason for me (and I’m not owed a reason). This is on a human level, as a fan? I fucking hate this decision because he didn’t pick my Knicks & I (who does?) It’s so easy to comment on leaving for a team that you had on the ropes in the WCF when it’s not actually your decision. As a fan, I can say it’s weak because I’d never leave my team for the team that beat me but as a fan, man and Haitian sex symbol, I’d be lying my ass off. We hold athletes to a competitive standard that we NEVER live by ourselves, granted this shit is all relative but relatively speaking all fans are full of shit; hence the term fanatics. We scream for “loyalty” from players while never thinking about how the owners would treat an athlete if they were injured, their performance declined or whatever other bullshit reasoning they give for cutting/trading a player while shortening their dream. The power belongs to the players and I appreciate that KD exercised that power. If you think KD uprooted his entire family to a new coast and situation with a decision in 1 weekend, well I have a bridge under my boat to sell you.

While I’ll be the 1st to admit we live in a LeBron James basketball world, this move wasn’t made as some evil conspiracy to dethrone the king. Durant to the Warriors is/was the best basketball decision he could have made. “There’s only 1 ball…” I have 2 and you’re an idiot. Golden State passes and moves without the ball better than almost any team in history, why wouldn’t Durant fit in? Do you even understand who or what Kevin Durant is on the basketball court? So you’re telling me Harrison Barnes can fit in on the Warriors but KD can’t? All those open 3’s Harrison Barnes missed and KEVIN DURANT 7’1 shooting forward can’t fit in? We’ve never seen a Kevin Durant before and while LBJ might be the standard for this era, KD is the mold from which all future wing players are made.

The numbers and accolades speak for themselves. Scoring titles, MVP, Olympic gold, all-star, All-NBA selection and also he kept the curse of Bowie alive. Has anyone even seen Greg Oden in the last few years? Is he ok? Please let me know. Russell Westbrook is easily my favorite player in the NBA and I really didn’t think KD had it in him to jump ship on that maniac because they were such a beautiful dynamic duo. Everyone speaking on KD’s legacy aka the most annoying word in sports; sports legacy is nothing more than everyone’s opinion of you and quite frankly, who gives a fuck? It’s fun banter for us as fans but is Kevin Durant all of a sudden not the same player he was a month ago because he joined a better basketball team or is he actually more dangerous of a player now? Society, fans, owners and mostly idiots would usually kill players for taking more money and chasing checks because waking up to go work at a job you hate isn’t about money at all but when a player chases an elusive championship they’re deemed disloyal, soft or whatever word you all learned on Google this week?

Big 3’s, Big 4’s, Big Fuck Out My Face, all of you are full of shit. Look at the NBA over the last 25 years; there have been 3 teams without 2 absolute superstars to win an NBA Title. The Pistons started the 90’s off with the Bad Boys, Michael & Scottie reeled off 3 straight, Olajuwon’s Rockets beat Al Patron’s Knicks in ’94, in ’95 they repeated but with the addition of HOF Clyde Drexler, MJ, Scottie & Rodman reeled off another 3 straight, we had the lockout, Tim Duncan & David Robinson’s Spurs beat Al Patron’s Knicks, Shaq & Colorado Kob reeled off 3 straight, The Pistons who had 4 all-stars in their starting lineup won, Tim Duncan & David Robinson with Manu and Tony Parker won, Wade & Shaq won, Spurs won without their Big 3 sans D-Rob, Celtics won with their Big 3 of Ray Ray, KG & Pierce, Lakers won back to back as Colorado Kob had Pau, Bynum & Lamar Odom, The Mavericks won with Dirk, team defense and by beating a Heat team that had more pressure on them than any team I ever watched before, LBJ, Bosh & Wade won 2 in a row, The Spurs with Ducan, Parker, Ginobi & Leonard beat Miami, Golden State with Curry, Thompson, Green beat the Cavs and the Cavs won the rematch with LBJ, Kyrie & Love. Houston ’94, Detroit ’04, Dallas ’11 are on the short list in the 25 years of NBA Champions without 2 definitive superstars. BASKETBALL IS A TEAM SPORT, IT TAKES MORE THAN ONE PLAYER TO WIN OR LOSE AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. KEVIN DURANT WANTS AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP, SO KEVIN DURANT WENT TO FIND MORE STARS TO PLAY WITH BECAUSE BASKETBALL IS A TEAM SPORT AND DION WAITERS AIN’T KLAY KLAY.

“How’s this different than LeBron?” The only reason people cared so much or talked so much shit about LBJ wasn’t The Decision, it was the reveal of LBJ, Bosh & Wade (bro you were already on the team) and they came out with a WrestleMania style entrance, smoke, cheerleaders, it looked like a championship parade and then LeBron said, “Not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4…” THAT was the reason people “hated” LeBron to Miami and of course because he didn’t pick their team, Al Patron & his Knicks included. Kevin Durant chose the Warriors in a letter on my captain’s website and that’s it but here’s the thing and this is for the Stephen A. Smith’s of the world and the social media society we live in; if the Golden State Warriors do not win the NBA Championship, Durant will be ridiculed, bashed, boo’d, persecuted and made into a meme for all to see because doing what you please doesn’t mean as much as people’s opinion of you; that is called sarcasm.

I just feel as if KD should fully embrace change and think a young Mike Jordan, he ditched his dark caesar, took off the gold chain, copped a baldie, an attitude and some rings. Maybe KD is happy to be nappy but shaving his head would make a statement, ‘I am Kevin Durant, I am not my hair” he can even do a YouTube tutorial on it. Seriously, who wouldn’t leave Oklahoma, that place is shaped to point people in the direction of California. It’s not like OKC has Henny Palooza coming to town but The Bay does; it makes a little more sense now don’t it?

Next week it’s the moment we have all been waiting for, Russell Westbrook, it’s your team, your time and your world now, you little fashionista you.
