Up Next: G Perico

Up Next: G Perico

The West Coast rap scene has been unique since the days of NWA, and the number of artists and producers coming fro the West is ridiculous. The mastermind of West Coast music is Dr. Dre as he helped introduce us to greats such as Ice Cube, MC Ren, Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, and many more. Today the West Coast has Nipsey Hussle (who is the most underrated mogul in hip-hop right now), TDE’s roster, which includes Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock; collectively known as Black Hippy. The Game is still dropping quality material, Problem just dropped a dope project with DJ Quik, Vince Staples just released his debut album, and YG is a star, but I want to talk about South Central's own G Perico.

The first records I heard from Perico that made me a fan was Ain't My Fault & Big Pimpin, in which he raps over classic records from Master P and Tha Dogg Pound, respectively. You can clearly hear the DJ Quik influence, and even a little Eazy-E. G Perico really caught my ear when released his third project, All Blue.

I wasn't aware All Blue wasn’t his first tape so I went and revisit his previous tapes, which are Tha Innerprize Two & Shit Don't Stop. Perico dropped All Blue this April, and it was another great project; one of favorite tracks from the project is Westside-Digital featuring Sonny Digital.

Perico definitely has the potential to be the next star from the West Coast, and why not? He has his own sound & style; have you seen his signature jheri curl? Sure, he might sound like DJ Quik, but he's not tryna to emulate and/or sound like him. We've seen other rappers try to mimic other artists, and make themselves look very stupid. I believe G Perico is next up, and he's very consistent with his content; dropping new music & videos on the regular.

If Perico keeps his same energy, I'm sure the right label deal will come along, because he's already stated his previous offers were bullshit, and didn’t make any sense for his career; it’s best for Perico to stay independent for now. While making a name for himself out West, G Perico has a buzz just about everywhere, and I think he should start collaborating with some artists. By no means should Perico do a track with any & everybody, but it would be cool to hear him do records with ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Nipsey Hussle, Snoop Dogg, and even Kendrick Lamar, to name a few. Another artist for Perico to collaborate with does come to mind, and that's 50 Cent. 50 did a record called I Want A Benz with YG & Nipsey; that sound fits Perico, so I'm sure 50 & G Perico would have good chemistry on a track.

I would love to hear G Perico over DJ Quik beats, those two should seriously do tape in the near future. You can never go wrong with the Alchemist; you just can't. Battlecat got heat too; there are so many producers that Perico would make great music with, he’s THAT dope! Shit, maybe G Perico will get a chance to work with Dr. Dre one day, and that would be fire. I would love to hear a tape of Perico rapping over the classic West Coast g-funk beats from the ‘90’s. He would sound great over Snoop's Gz and Hustlaz or Warren G's Regulate. G Perico has the talent, and all he has to do is keep dropping great music.

We're almost halfway through 2017, so I'm sure we'll being hearing more from South Central's own. In all honesty, Perico should’ve been on the XXL Freshmen cover this year, and I don't see how he didn't make it, especially after Shit Don't Stop & All Blue; at the rate he’s going, publications both new & old will need G Perico more than he needs them.
