What is the "Culture"?
"Do it for the culture."
So lately I've been troubled with the latest trend that has entered into the realm of social media and popular culture. I don't know if it is considered slang or an actual thing but the phrase "do it for the culture" has been on the lips and fingertips of a lot of people. The only problem is, what culture are we talking about?
The term can be loosely applied to damn near every situation and without question be supported for no reason at all. Don't believe me? Stop reading for a moment and do a social media search for yourself. I'll wait... Do you see? Pictures of people in front of cars or with clothes, money, and even food. Half naked men and women are "doing it for the culture". I've seen twerk videos rewarded for "doing it for the culture". So what culture are we perpetuating through these random human acts of narcissism?
At first glance you could assume hip-hop culture. Most of these images are blatantly used to reel us in. Hip-hop is also highly scrutinized for these images and we as a people wildly defend hip-hop. On the other hand the term isn't primarily used by people of color. However one can assume the terms origins were put in place to protect our culture from culture vultures. Still it was never defined exactly to what culture we are doing it for.
So is "doing it for the culture" problematic or something just fun to say? I will say both. The phrase in itself is harmless and since it's so versatile it's applicable anywhere. Also in its use for the most part is mostly positive. However when combined with certain imagery, it's a watered down terminology being tossed carelessly around displaying no cultural impact at all. "Doing it for the culture" is just as lazy as "Do it for the vine". Sure it may be fun for a while but if everyone is doing it with no real reason on why, it will burn out as fast as the latest trend.
Culture is something powerful that a lot of us are crying to protect from the aforementioned culture vultures. If we are watering down our culture into a 5 word undefined catchphrase we are just as bad. We can't complain that people are stealing our culture yet were are willing to give away undefined lines without explanation. Maybe I'm out of touch with what's going on today or maybe I'm on to something. This is just my way of "doing it for the culture", whatever the hell that means...
