What's Beef? Vol. 3: MC Shan vs. KRS-One

What's Beef? Vol. 3: MC Shan vs. KRS-One

The date in which Hip Hop started can be debated but who started the genre is not, the God Father of hip-hop is none other than the Bronx’s own Kool Herc with no dispute.  Rap debates are serious business, and it can turn friends to enemies and put social media in frenzy.  Rappers battling has taking a dip in the recent years but recently with Drake vs. Meek, its been resurrected a bit, but before we can even think of talking rap battles, we must go to the battle that started it all, MC Shan vs. KRS One.

Although Shan vs. KRS wasn’t the first battle in history, it was the first major battle that had radio and the streets BUGGIN.  It was a battle that elevated KRS One, the Bronx and Boogie Down Productions, KRS’s crew.  It also pinned crews, MC Shan’s Juice Crew vs. BDP.  This beef had so many layers but we will focus on the two who were involved.  MC Shan with the help of Mr. Magic, the top radio personality at the time, was one of Rap’s biggest stars and KRS was an up and coming MC who reached out the Mr. Magic to have his music played on the radio but was ultimately turned down.  This rejection angered young KRS and he began to write the infamous South Bronx record in response to MC Shan’s “The Bridge” which according to KRS claimed that Queens in fact started Hip-hop.  Like most rap battles, miscommunication is the spark of it all.  When “South Bronx” hit the airwaves thanks to the legendary Kool DJ Red Alert, NYC went nuts, to put it in prospective, think about crazy you acted when you first heard Drake’s “Back to Back”.  After KRS responded, Shan dropped “Kill that Noise”, unfortunately, KRS then released “The Bridge is Over” and MC Shan and the Juice Crew were as finished as the last move on Mortal Combat.

The battle became the staple of proper battling, many battles have happened since but none quite compares to MC Shan vs. KRS (Listen).  Recently, the two have thrown jabs at each other which are not included in the audio because frankly, enough is enough, its been THIRTY YEARS, but if you would like to indulge, peep the links KRS, Shan, KRS 2, Shan 2, KRS 3.
