I'm Voluntarily a Jets Fan Vol. 5 by @klew24
I get to write another one of these after a win which is always good. In the previous piece, I wrote about how I was terrified about this game because, well, I’m voluntarily a Jets fan. It had all the ingredients of the dreaded potential trap game. The Jets were coming off an emotional comeback win against the Giants, their playoff lives are on the line, and they had an inferior opponent invading MetLife Stadium.
The Jets put all of that noise to bed rather quickly as they came out as sharp as a tack and dominated the Titans from wire to wire in a 30-8 victory. The Jets opened with a long seven minute touchdown drive that was capped off by an Eric Decker touchdown catch. The Jets eased the concerns of the entire fan base with that drive as they set the tone for what was a dominant day.
The Jets led the Titans 27-0 at halftime. Do you know how rare it is that the Jets, for all intents and purposes, bury an opponent by halftime? The Jets beat those dudes so badly that all I did at the bar was talk shit for 3.5 quarters. That was particularly enjoyable seeing the Jets lay waste to a terrible Titans team. That’s one thing I’ll give this Jets team. They’ve generally handled the teams they are supposed to handle with the exception of the TJ Yates led Houston Texans a month ago.
Muhammad Wilkerson dominated this game in a way that makes you wonder, “Hey, can the Jets really afford not to pay this man his money?” He busted through the Titans offensive line several times to disrupt the Titans offense as he sacked Mariota three times and helped stifle the Titans “running game”(I use that term loosely). Wilkerson now has a career high 12 sacks and seems to be making the “Fuck you, pay me” claim with each passing performance. I don’t know what the right answer is as paying a non QB the type of money Wilkerson will command can be problematic within the wrong context. At the same time, letting a young anchor for your defense sends a bad message to everybody in that locker-room. I’d like to see him stay but I understand both sides and games like Sunday are on the “Pay the man” side.
Ryan Fitzpatrick played another good game as he went 21/36 for 263 yards and no turnovers. He did have some accuracy issues in the first half but he continues to feed Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker the football and has been relatively mistake free recently. Hopefully he continues this level of play at Jerry’s World Saturday night in another must have game for the Jets.
Calvin Pryor and Brian Winters have both come into their own this season. Obviously both are on different levels as you can argue that Calvin Pryor could be a Pro-Bowler and Winters is a relatively average guard. With that said, they both have quieted a lot of doubters with their performances this year. Winters jump to average has been rather shocking as he played the roles of speed bump and red carpet all of last season. Putting him out there was legitimately a detriment to the safety of whoever was under center last season. Hat tip to John Idzik for those two draft picks. Now if only he would’ve picked Martavis Bryant over Jalen Saunders OR Shaq Evans.
Now I move on to this week’s game against the 4-9 Dallas Cowboys. This is another high stakes game for the Jets against an inferior opponent who’s just playing for pride at this point. I think this game presents a different set of issues than last week’s inferior opponent in that the Cowboys are actually a legitimate NFL team still. While they have Matt Cassel at QB, they do present a decent enough running game and a respectable NFL defense with a pass rush that could give a shaky Jets OL some problems. I also feel like Dez Bryant is due to have a good game as he has really been quiet all year and Greg Hardy going up against Breno Giacomini could be disastrous.
Ultimately though, I just can’t see the Jets losing to this edition of the Cowboys with their playoff lives on the line. If they lose to Matt Cassel, I might fuck around and get arrested on Saturday. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do this weekend and enjoy the holidays. (AL PATRON NOTE: HA!)
Prediction: Jets 27 Cowboys 10
