2016-17 NBA Season Week 5 Recap: Boston Celtics
I have a love/hate relationship with this Celtics team so far this season, but the hate portion is has definitely clouded my mind the majority of the time. There are games where we see a glimpse of the team everyone expected to see coming into this season, and then there are games where I sit on my couch and ask myself "what the fuck am I watching"? Don't get me wrong, I understand it's still early, and the first place Cavs only have 3 more wins than we do at this point in the season. Our prized free agent acquisition, Al Horford, has missed more than half of our games, and Jae Crowder has missed his fair share of games with injuries as well. But the trend we're headed towards has me a bit nervous, because there's no reason why we shouldn't finish this season 2nd in the East. Like I mentioned before, we get buckets, scoring the rock has never been an issue for us. But our defense is looking piss poor compared to what it's been the past few years.
I feel like I need to vent about some stuff right now. Let me start with the first thing on my mind: Marcus Smart. Look bruh, you've gotten 10 times better than you were last season, and you're still a dog on defense. You make a number of winning plays EVERY game that don't show up on the stats sheet but make you say "I'm glad we have a guy like that on our team". When you enter the game off the bench, our team has a whole different level of toughness to it that doesn't come with the starting lineup, so your contributions are valued. BUT, when will you wake up and realize you're not Steph Curry? There's absolutely NO reason under the sun that you should be taking as many 3's as you're taking. Do you not realize you shot a historically low percentage from long range last season? Do you realize that it hasn't gotten any better? Any time the ball gets kicked out to you behind the 3-point arc I cringe, because I fucking know you're going to shoot it. You can't help yourself; you're so wide open. But nigga, there's a REASON why you're so wide open on these 3's. How is it that in the game against Detroit on Wednesday you shot 8 three pointers, EIGHT, and Al Horford had 5 shots total? That's unacceptable. I actually get angry every time you hit a 3 because in my head I'm like "man, this nigga is gonna think he can actually shoot now and is going to just keep putting them up". Sure enough, I'm right.
I blame Brad Stevens for this though. As much praise as I give him for being one of the best coaches in the league (which he deserves), he also needs to take the blame when it's his fault. Someone needs to communicate to Smart that he can't shoot, so chill on the Curry impressions. It's not just Smart either, Brad needs to tell the whole team to stop shooting so many 3's, especially since our team isn't necessarily full of knock down shooters. Shooting 42 damn 3's against the Pistons? The Warriors rarely even shoot that many and they actually have a team of shooters. Brad needs to do a better job of making sure the only person on our team with multiple All Star appearances (Al Horford) gets more touches. Less Marcus Smart and Amir Johnson 3's and more Horford in the post please.
You're probably asking yourself, "If this team gets buckets, why is he harping on the offensive side of the ball so much"? Easy answer: long shots lead to long rebounds, and our transition defense has been terrible. If you haven't noticed yet, our supremely talented starting PG also happens to be 5'9". When these shots go up and all of our big men are under the basket, who is the only person back to defend in transition with these long rebounds? IT isn't stopping anyone on defense, not even Ish Smith. We need to change and we need to change before the all-star break, or else we're going to be yet another first round out.
