Spawn: The Comic Book Movie We Deserve
Last week at Comic Con, Todd McFarlane delivered some great news, as he finally announced a new Spawn film is currently in development. Blumhouse Productions will produce the film, and McFarlane will write & direct. For those unfamiliar with Todd McFarlane, he is a legendary comic book creator who is best known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and the fan-favorite Spawn.
A feature-length Spawn film was released in 1997, and it was the film we sort of asked for but definitely wasn't the film we deserved. The film had some really cool moments, but overall it was a bad movie, however, Michael Jai White was the PERFECT Al Simmons/Spawn.
Fast-forward 20 years, and everyone has STILL been asking for a sequel, especially since we’ve heard numerous rumors about reboots, remakes, etc. since the cancelled 1998 sequel. Todd McFarlane has been pushing extra hard for a new Spawn since 2007, you can tell this is a passion project for him because he's been saying the movie is going to come out even if he has to finance, direct and produce it himself; give the man credit, he’s lived up to his word after years of rewrites and pitching the film to different studios.
Todd McFarlane described his new Spawn as a hard, rated R/NC-17, creepy horror, supernatural thriller, and not a stereotypical superhero movie, and as a huge McFarlane/Spawn fan…I'm perfectly fine with that! In a recent interview McFarlane states he's campaigning for a budget of about only $10 million; the actors for the Spawn wouldn’t have to workout, train, wear a costume or prepare for the role, just go out there & act. That's really interesting because this would lead to speculation this rendition of Spawn will probably be CGI.
Also joining the Spawn reboot is a cop named Twitch, and McFarlane wants none other than Leonardo DiCaprio for this role. The characters Sam, and Twitch were also apart of the hit Spawn Animated Series that was featured on HBO for a couple years, but that's all we know as far as possible casting & characters that may appear for the film.
I'm excited to see an R-rated Spawn this time around, the comics are very graphic and a PG-13 rating in the world that Spawn is a part of would be pointless, again.
Who should the new Al Simmons/Spawn be? Various names have been suggested for the role, and just a few years back Jamie Foxx actually met with Todd McFarlane to discuss the project. I don't know if those talks are still in tact, but that would be an interesting & amazing role for Foxx. My choice for the new Al Simmons would be Power's own Omari Hardwick; if you watch Power then you can see Hardwick has what it takes to bring the Spawn character to life. Several actors are already interested in the role, so why not have “Ghost” throw his hat in the ring? Hardwick as Spawn could take him to another level. With a studio like Blumhouse taking a chance on McFarlane to allow him the freedom to create this film, I have faith in McFarlane & this project, and I say that as a big Spawn fan. This film has been long overdue and with a studio that produced successful horror films with small budgets, such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Split and recently the critically acclaimed Get Out, Spawn is the right property for Blumhouse.
We don't need to see villains in this movie yet, I just want to see Spawn utilized in a great way, and see how Twitch fits into the story, then we can see the clown aka The Violator; maybe have him teased at the end of the movie for future installments.
I can't wait till this movie goes into production, hopefully at the end of the year, until then I'm going to keep researching and waiting on what news breaks, and will be re-watching the classic animated series…and MAYBE the ’97 movie too.
If everything goes as planned, we should be getting the new Spawn film we deserve by late 2018.
