If Twitter Existed: "George Bush Doesn't Care About Back People..."
“George Bush doesn’t care about Black People…” – Kanye West
For however you feel about him, Kanye West will always make you feel something. This is probably the most proud BLACK moment I’ve ever witnessed in my life. It’s one of those moments you remember where you were, who you were with and what your initial reaction was. I’m never short on speaking exactly how I feel, regardless if the time is “right” (what the fuck does that mean?) or the situation calls for it. Speaking your mind is the most expensive free thing we own and I wish more people spoke theirs because the cost of biting your tongue only leaves yourself and other poor.
What’s rich is how Kanye made Mike Meyers 400 degrees of awkward in his white comfort. See, white people don’t understand us, our plight or how to clean and season chicken correctly. Not only did Kanye say, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” People forget beforehand he talked about how Black People were being portrayed during the aftermath of Katrina. It’s all in the video below if you need a refresher but it makes me think, what if we had Twitter when that happened on live TV?
I can see it now, mayonnaise as a dip for wings Twitter would have called Kanye every type of porch monkey, black twitter would have praised Kanye for being so brazen in a time of despair for our own but then there would be the other brothers. Who are the “other brothers”? The other brothers are the black people who think the only skin color that matters is the one on their palms. Other brothers would have said the time was inappropriate for such a stance (keep in mind this was rugby Kanye so there was no Kim K. to factor in) these people would have talked about his mother, and said he just embarrassed her and black people across the nation. It would have been the birth of all lives matter because da whites and other brothers cannot stand not to be the topic of discussion and/or center of attention. Twitter would have been super helpful for the people suffering from the effects of the hurricane, which would have been priority number 1. Is Kanye West the martyr he portrays himself to be? Absolutely bit but on this September night in 2005, he had the balls to stand in front of America and tell them their president doesn’t care about US and THAT was voicing our opinion and emotion on a stage where FEMA basically looted money from those who donated to help. Fuck George Bush, fuck America and politics. That would have been what I said on Twitter that night.
The George Bush memes would have been out of this fucking world, imagine his distressed ugly fucking smug face being captioned all night? Kanye’s record sales would have jumped by 500% that night, oh glory it would have been a historic night on the world wide web we weave.
Next week? I imagine having social media’s most dangerous app during the East Coast/West Coast “beef”. Until then, tell people how you feel before you have to imagine what it would’ve been like and protect DeRay at all costs.
