Kanye West: New Leader of Latveria
Kanye West may have become Hip-Hop’s greatest heel of all time. Over the course of the past several months, his reputation has taken a drastic hit. The release of The Life Of Pablo is still confusing at best. Don’t even ask me how to rate the album. I only rate the songs I like at this point (to my count, I only genuinely like 6-7 tracks). After the initial leak, Kanye began to tweak TLOP and had subsequent releases with the hopes of matching the high standards he obviously has for himself. The Saint Pablo Tour has taken a turn for the worst, in particular his stops in California: San Jose saw Kanye’ support for president elect Donald Trump and his Sacramento stop ending early after being two hours late and performing only three songs. His concerts have become keynote speeches rather than concerts and the fans it looks like they are finally fed up with his antics. The rest of the tour is officially cancelled, leaving Kanye’s career in limbo with his public likeness at an all time low.
I can’t help but compare Kanye West to Marvel’s own villain Doctor Doom. The narcissism between the two knows no bounds as both know they are very much gifted in their respective crafts and make it a point to remind everyone in order to serve their egos. Doom wants to prove that his intellect and prowess along with his handle of mysticism is superior to everyone in existence, in particular to Reed Richards, who is the leader of the Fantastic Four. Is this any different from Kanye’s quest to conquer the music industry? He is once quoted for stating, “by not giving my album a classic rating, you diminish your magazine’s credibility”. With enough reading, you can find Doom quotes that can be interchangeable with Kanye and no one could really tell the difference. The sheer arrogance from the two can as laughable as it is admirable.
Does Kanye have his own nation of Latveria to reign over? I would like to say he has a following that can rival Doom. In Latveria, The Black Swans are disciples of Doctor Doom in which they created a religion that centered around his identity as Rabum Alal. In today’s world, the Internet can be one strange place to have a cult but Kanye too has a religious type following. The users at Kanye To The proclaim they have the largest Kanye West fan forum on the web, with 10,000 registered users with even more guests that visit the site. Threads can be found on anything from discussions about his kids to crazy theories such as his current antics being an album rollout. It gets even stranger as the web site last year was temporarily out of service and rumors began to swirl that the smaller Yeezy Talk forum hacked the system and crashed it. The two individuals are so revered by their followers they are looked at in God like proportions. Every word is taken as gospel and both demographics are ready to carry out instructions ordered by their leader to reach his goal. The Black Swans objective is to serve Doom by destroying other Earths to buy other universes more time. Fans of Kanye go to unbelievable lengths to get a pair of Yeezys and resell value for a pair can go for as high as $10,099 USD (this pair being a pair of light brown Yeezy Boost 750 found on eBay).
Although Jay Z is no Reed Richards in the arch nemesis scale, it appears as though Kanye has drawn the line in the sand in his relationship with his former Roc-a-Fella cohort. Reed Richards is well respected by not only within his Fantastic Four crew, but also within the Marvel universe due to his intellect and advances in the science field. Reed and Doom also were once fellow students at the same university until an experiment gone wrong scarred Doom’s face and he vowed vengeance on Reed Richards. Jay Z is rumored to not be on good terms with Kanye and this has forced Kanye to call him out on various occasions, including during the Saint Pablo tour. The sudden divide between the two artists is currently unknown but if we were to use Doom’s story arcs, it could provide us with hints what may follow after Kanye’s latest antics. Doom has appeared in various Marvel universes to either engage in battle with those such as Prince Rudolfo and Silver Surfer or has even offered his services. One story arc has him temporarily forming an alliance with the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four to fight Onslaught. Doom’s lone wolf mentality can be best described as someone who isn’t particularly interested in the destruction of all things good. He just wants to prove his talents are beyond recognition; it can be said about Kanye. He is willing to work with others and let them shine but this all for his benefit. His craving for others to see his vision is more than his palette can handle sometimes and it can lead to his destruction.
On So Appalled, Jay Z rapped, “Dark Knight feeling, die to be a hero. Or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Who would have ever thought that this line on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy would have came true, but it wasn’t regarding Sean Carter? He unwillingly foretold Kanye’s future within Hip-Hop and now there is no turning back. He is public enemy number one and like Doctor Doom, it is up to Kanye to figure out how to work within the circumstances he dealt himself with.
