A Letter to Colin Kaepernick
Remain strident and strong in your purpose. Understand that you're not above constructive reproach. Every move you make will remain under heavy scrutiny. Good or bad we're still with you. It probably was a bad decision to wear a shirt with a known oppressor. But we won't burn you in effigy for a shirt worn four months ago. Your new detractors aren't much different than the originals. They preface their statements by stating, "I was with Kaep but..." If a shirt or an article from an individual who voted for Donald Trump was all it took then they weren't with you to begin with. Your new detractors who were fortunate enough to escape their oppression come to America to find a better life but also benefit from white privilege in the process. Just look at the vastly different experience for those looking to leave Haiti and Cuba to seek refuge in this "greatest country in the world". At times these conversations will seem trivial to compare one oppression to another. But we ask that you continue to take the measured approach. You're still a young man and we understand that there will be growing pains throughout this journey. Stay the course.
