We NEED a New Max Payne Video Game
I was watching the Max Payne movie the other night (a bad adaptation but a somewhat watchable film) and it just hit me that we haven't had a Max Payne video game in 5 years. The video game series started off dark and gritty to its core, and the story was amazing.
In 2001, the first entry of the series found Max looking for revenge of his murdered wife and daughter while being framed for another cop's death which happen to be Max's best friend, this game was fresh and original. Developed by Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games, this was arguably one of the best third person shooters at the time, also being set on the coldest winter night in New York City made this game even better. The second Max Payne in 2003 took you on the same ride as its predecessor with a deeper storyline and a female love interest by the name of Mona Sax, and somehow this game was even darker than the original. In Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne, you wasn't quite done taking care of business from the first game, Max's wife and daughter's murder were still tied to corrupt cops and the people behind the Valkyrie drug. The game was upgraded with better graphics, shooting mechanics and animations and yes it was again developed by Remedy.
Fast forward several years later in 2012, we finally have a third Max Payne introduced to us but this time Remedy wasn't involved, they played a consultant role for the game but nothing was heavily developed by them, Rockstar was in charge this time. Max Payne 3 took you on a different ride this time; Max ends up taking a job in Brazil after killing a crime family in New Jersey. This Max wasn't completely different from the previous games, a few things were tweaked like the story but it was really at a minimum. Now I would say the change of scenery was a little off for me, but the game took a new approach on Max and what kind of space he's in at life right now.
This time Max is that depressed alcoholic who doesn't give a shit what happens to him at this point in life, it somehow he finds himself in another gun fight and ends up living, this game was not at dark as 1 & 2 from the writing to the cut scenes, MP3 is like The Dark Knight Rises of the franchise, good but definitely not like the first two, a lot of trilogy films suffer from that, but I still had fun playing it.
The Max Payne franchise right now is in a great place, all three games are well received from the fans even if the third lacks the noir dark and gritty style, but after 5 years I think it's time to introduce the new generation and hardcore fans to a fourth installment, and if it happens to be Remedy's next secret game they're working on, then I can't wait. The only way Max Payne 4 will work is if Sam Lake is back writing with the help of Remedy developing, Rockstar is too busy upgrading Grand Theft Auto 5 and now has Red Dead Redemption 2 coming this fall, then after that a potential sequel to the Bully game, and maybe Grand Theft Auto 6, so as far as developing wise, their hands are tied up. If Max Payne 4 were to happen then it also needs a new location, either Max has to return to the cold New York and deal with old enemies (which is the best option), or explore Miami or Los Angeles, or why not just make all three the locations, Brazil was cool but it just didn't have the same feel as MP 1 & 2, and also keep the Matrix style bullet time and nightmare sequences.
If this is Max's last ride then he might have to die in the game too, according to the storyline he is getting older so it's fitting, but who knows how far this series can and will go. As far as the movie go, just find a better writer and director, I wouldn't even mind Mark Whalberg, Mila Kunis and even Ludacris returning, the film was just another example of a movie studio butchering and dropping the ball on a video game adaptation with high potential.
