Michael Jackson's Moonwalker Revisited
28 years ago, Michael Jackson released an anthology film starring himself and of all people a legend known as Joe Pesci, I still remember watching this movie when I was a kid, this was back in the VHS days, the movie was and still is dope, when it cuts on you all you see dark with a light beamed down on Michael's shoes as he walks with the sparking socks and does the spin then "Michael Jackson" appears on the screen then the Moonwalker title. Right after that the movie opens with the first segment as Michael gives a powerful live performance of Man In The Mirror; during his Bad Tour, which featured other clips. Watching this today and it still doesn't make sense, you see footage of people in the crowd crying, passing out, and being carried out the stadium, Michael Jackson was a alien and nobody I repeat NOBODY comes close to performing in music today but that's for another discussion. While Michael is performing Man In The Mirror, you'll see a montage of clips that feature Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, children in Africa and other people apart of historical events, this was definitely a away to open a movie. Segment 2 is retrospective, starting off with the record Music and Me, you see brief biopic of the Jackson's early years from the Jackson 5 until the Bad world tour, segment 2 is very cool and might be my favorite of the movie, I just wish they showed the full length videos instead of just 15-20 seconds except for The Way You Make Me Feel is about 2-3 minutes, but that just would have made the movie longer I guess. Next up we enter segment 3 titled Badder, we see a parody of the Bad music video but this time it's kids filling in the roles with Brandon Quintin Adams leading (from People Under The Stairs) as Michael's part, this video is still funny but they killed it, with the original Bad video starring Michael Jackson, Wesley Snipes and directed by Martin Scorsese this one looked exactly the same but the kids still had fun doing it, very cool and hilarious video.
Speed Demon is segment 4, the Badder video actually transitions into this, Michael is getting chased by claymation fans, media, paparazzi and others, Speed Demon has a Who Framed Roger Rabbit theme to it, after Michael escapes the claymation people, you see him have a dance off with a rabbit, thing is they're having a dance off in a No Dancing Zone, when the rabbit is gone out of nowhere, a cop shows up asks Michael for his autograph in a sarcastic way on the ticket, when the cop leaves you see the rabbit's head on the rock watching Michael the whole time, this segment also featured a light jab at Prince at the time and also ex manager Frank DiLeo, MJ definitely knew what he was doing. Leave Me Alone is segment 5, its just a music video of Leave Me Alone as the video shows Michael's life as an amusement park as he addresses the media about Elizabeth Taylor to the buying of Elephant Man's bones, you'll also see the media as dogs in this video as a metaphor that Michael is saying the media are animals. Segment 6 is when the shit gets really real. Smooth Criminal. With Smooth Criminal arguably being a top 3 video from Mike this is exactly what MJ was during this movie, Joe Pesci played a villain named Frankie Lideo, a drug dealer who eats monkey nuts, and has a weird obsession with spiders and leaves peanut shells everywhere he goes, apparently the Lideo character is an anagram of his ex manager, I guess after he was fired MJ did some slight changes and took jabs at him in this movie. Michael and the 3 kids are running from Lideo and his army then somehow the Smooth Criminal video happens, and the little girl gets kidnapped. Michael Jackson was a Transformer before the movies that's put today, he could change into a damn bulletproof car, but that doesn't stop there, he literally turns into Optimus Prime when the final battle happens against Pesci, after he defeats Lideo it's not over yet, MJ transforms into a spacecraft. When Mike finally saves the day, the conclusion of the movie starts, Michael takes the kids back to the club where the Smooth Criminal video happened but it turns into a backstage where Michael Jackson is going to perform Come Together and also surprises the kids with the lost dog Skipper, the end credits roll and Ladysmith Black Mambazo is performing The Moon Is Walking.
Moonwalker is a classic, I don't care what you say, and the video game was fire, Michael Jackson was a genius and like I said earlier nobody will come close, Warner Bros needs to release this film on Blu-ray in the U.S. a.s.a.p., yes you can purchase it on Amazon from Warner Bros UK but it needs to be in stores here in the states too, the young generation that needs to watch this shouldn't have to go on YouTube, but you can stream it on Kodi also, Moonwalker is timeless and doesn't take itself serious and that's why I love it, the nostalgic feel never left from when the movie begins and ends.
Long live the king!
