Film Review: Power Rangers (Spoilers)
In 2017 here we are with a full length feature film of the Power Rangers, if you would've asked me 5 years ago do I want to see this, my answer would have been hell no, but things change and so do we right? The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was one of the coolest shows of my childhood, the early seasons were the best but then things got out of hand of course, to me the black and green rangers were the best, but man looking back at the show now, it's corny and cheesy as hell and you know what, I would still watch episodes of it like it was the 90s, and this is what that movie is today, it's not exactly MMPR but some moments in the film will bring you back to the show, at least for me it did.
I loved how the movie starts off, Zordon was the orginal red ranger and his team went up against Rita Repulsa, I always wanted to see a backstory of Zordon and it was cool for producers to add that in the movie, now last year there was a Power Rangers short film directed by Joseph Kahn and produced by Adi Shankar which was something unexpected yet great, we never seen a hardcore dark version of the Power Rangers and that project was well out together, now if you watch that short film then watch this new movie, the opening scenes are very much identical, it's almost like this 2017 movie took Adi & Kahn's opening sequence and remixed it on their own but it was cool to see nonetheless. I'm just going to say this right now, Billy (blue ranger) was highlight of the show from the first time he was screen, other than that the movie is not so great, but I enjoyed it, it's very watchable and fun but it also dragged in some parts, I don't think its necessarily for the movie to have a run time of 2 hours and I'll tell you why, we should have got more of the Rangers fighting, the Zords vs Golddar needed to be better, that's where the last 30 minutes falls out of place.
There's so many easter eggs in this movie it's almost like you know what the studio is going to do in the sequel, we already have the green rangers being introduced to us while Rita will make a comeback to try to destroy the earth again. I would love to see the white ranger try to fit in with this team somehow in the future, I would also like Lord Zed to make an appearance down the line and I think he will. Like I said, Power Rangers is a watchable movie and if you're a fan of the show growing up, you'll like this, to say this movie is
The Breakfast Club mixed with Chronicle, that's actually an odd but good statement, I didn't love this movie but I had fun watching, I don't care, the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie in 1995 is a classic, the Turbo Rangers don't exist to me so this film is better than that one. I don't know how far Lionsgate can take the franchise but there's already 5 more films development, that might be too much but oh well, will I go see Power Rangers again, maybe, it wasn't too serious of a movie and they kept the corny and cheesy feel from the show while making it kind of dark, we just need the whole team to assemble up in the sequel now, the red, green, blue, black, yellow and pink rangers, and maybe the white too, I'm giving the Power Rangers movie a 7.5/10.
