Movie Review: Suicide Squad
One of the biggest movies of 2016 just released, and yes it's titled Suicide Squad. Soon as this movie was announced in 2014 I was excited and building expectations higher than ever, and when Will Smith was casted as Deadshot, I was definitely sold. Now the DC vs. Marvel charade is pretty comical (no pun), I fucks with Marvel cause it's just plain and simple they make better movies, and I was excited to hear about BvS and SS and when them Batman vs. Superman and Suicide Squad trailers were out, I was like oh yeah finally, come to find out the we were lied to once again. Man of Steel in 2013 sort of kick things off for the DC Cinematic Extended Universe, it was a cool movie, I liked it, especially for a origin story of Superman, 3 years later here we are with BvS and SS, and I'll get to a brief BvS review later but Suicide Squad in my personal opinion is taking a bit too much heat from critics, it isn't great, it isn't bad, it's just a good, cool, fun entertaining film, up until....
Yeah, the "up until" part, more like throughout the whole movie basically, some of the highlights of the film were Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and Killer Croc, (I'll save the best for last), the script is one of the biggest problems of SS, David Ayer is a great writer and director but you can tell this movie was written in 6 weeks, I'm not putting the blame on Ayer all the way, to be honest I think he was rushed to write it or if they still kept Justin Marks (writer front the horrible Street Fighter Legend Of Chun-Li) script and Ayer just retooled it, I was just expecting something more edgier from the man who wrote Training Day. Aside from the writing, the directing is on point, even though it did feel kind of rushed and looks like it took place on one set all together, the first and second acts were done really well, as far as the 3rd act, I don't know what the hell was going on man, we were stuck with a watered down pointless villain with the same repetitive "destroy the world" mindset while having the city in the sky with a huge light beam, we seen this over and over from plenty of movies such as Man Of Steel, Star Trek, this year's TMNT and a lot more, if you're looking for the same movie you seen in the animated film Assault On Arkham, you're not going to get it, that was my problem too, I was really watching to expect something similar to the premise of AOA but it didn't happen, some of the cuts you see in the trailers that were released aren't even in the film, you can go back and watch all the trailers released from the Comics Con to the latest one and it feels like you've watched a completely different movie off rip, and now there's a list of scenes that were cut from the theatrical version, reports of there were 2 versions of the film shown, which only means we're gonna get another ultimate rated R cut Blu-ray of what this movie should have been, but unlike BvS I'll be interested and excited to watch, BvS was just a mess, the Batman scenes made that watchable in some aspects, I enjoyed Suicide Squad more. If anything the Joker (who was fucking dope by the way, just needed more screen time) should've been the main villain in SS too.
People are comparing this movie to Fantastic 4 need a good ass whooping, no way this movie is that bad, I can watch SS multiple times over FF, Jared Leto killed it as the Joker, people need to stop the Heath Ledger jive talk comparisons, either you want a new Joker or you don't, this Joker had some elements and characteristics from the Animated Series back in the 90s and brought a gangster edge to it, the chemistry between him and Harley Quinn was amazing, this Joker is your typical lunatic and yet scary at the same time, Jared Leto didn't disappoint at all and I hope we get this Joker in the next Suicide Squad and solo Batman film. Margot Robbie just might be the baddest vanilla woman on the planet, she played Harley Quinn down to the bone even with her accent kicking in some scenes. I enjoyed Killer Croc, Croc reminded me of an episode in the Batman Animated Series titled "Almost Got Em", Croc's humor in Suicide Squad matches that and I hope we see more in the future, El Diablo was cool and his back story is emotional that's why he is who he is in the film, Captain Boomerang was pointless, Rick Flag is a racist, you can't tell me otherwise, I wanted him dead after what he kept from Deadshot in that bar scene, and Amanda Waller is fucking ruthless, Viola Davis is a certified legend already and she's the grandmother or aunt you want in your family.
But let's talk about Will Smith, this man knew what the hell he was doing when WB offered him the role and he signed on within weeks in late 2014, awhile ago I talked about how Will Smith doesn't need a comeback in Hollywood, if this was his "comeback" role then WILL SMITH IS BACK AND HE'S DEADSHOT FOREVER. Deadshot in Suicide Squad is basically Will Smith's chess move telling all the mothafuckas and critics who doubted him to never doubt him again. This movie should have just been called Deadshot and Friends because that's exactly what it was, what Will brought to the Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot role is almost if Mike Lowry from Bad Boys 2 became a hit man. You knew from the start of this movie Will was going to take over, him sharing the screen with 5 other people in a big summer movie, yeah Will and David Ayer had this mapped out from the jump and I Can't wait for what they bring in Netflix's first $100+ million film 'Bright'. My only issue with Deadshot was the damn mask, the mask is fire and I need to get my hands on that but Deadshot only wore it for 45 seconds in the whole movie! We needed more scenes with the mask but hopefully we'll get it in the director's cut. It's clear that Deadshot was the ultimate highlight of the film, WB and the DCEU might as well announce a Deadshot franchise, trilogy or whatever, even add him in the future Batman movies because that's really what the general public wants, until then it's now time for Will to get Bad Boys 3 & 4 rolling.
Suicide Squad was a fun and cool movie, the music in the movie didn't bother me as much either, despite the bad script, and the 3rd act etc., this isn't a miss for David Ayer, with the way critics are killing it right now I think it's kind of a stretch, the movie definitely has its problems but it doesn't deserve the boiling hate, but that's criticism, I believe if Ayer had more time to really write the script it would have been excellent, I think this is the movie that can finally get things cooking for the DCEU but they still have a lot of work to do; a lot of work.
After a 3rd viewing I'm giving Suicide Squad a 7/10.
