“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” - Malcolm X
Donald Trump is President Elect and future leader of the United States of America, and as I type these words I smile and also cringe. When Trump threw his hat in the ring to become the next leader of the free world a lot of us seen it as a joke, today the joke is on us. We the people have been played, and there is nothing we can do about it. No amount of marching, protests, petitions, or civil unrest can change this fact. He won, fair and square and we the people are to blame.
Now in the past few weeks, a lot of fingers have been pointed, whether it be to the amount of uneducated white voters, the amount of people who chose not to vote (49.6%), the electoral college, or simply just white supremacy, none of this seems to matter. The real culprit has been the distrustful, tasteless, and often bias media who fueled the fervor of the American people to be lulled into a stupor of trust. The media pasted Trump on prime time television day in and day out, and we tuned in to "must see TV" to laugh and mock his debate techniques, lack of decorum and restraint, in an all showing of bread and circuses. Donald Trump made a huge spectacle of himself and we were his audience, no matter if we were for or against him. In fact reports of record high ratings were recorded during the GOP debates on Fox, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, and so on and so forth. While on the other side the Democratic debates remained a snooze fest with Hillary Clinton as the obvious but not so great choice. We the American people already made our choice, we tuned in every night, we flooded social media with our views, and we collectively shook our heads the night of November 9th, when Trump won easily.
We the people helped fuel the machine of Trump's candidacy and now we are to bear witness to Trump's America. As he builds his cabinet of supremacist, bigots, and a right wing Conservative Christian Vice President at his side America opines for a miraculous third-term from our current but soon to be done President Obama. Trump's America has already fueled hatred, and division and this journalist is left to wonder what is to become of our so-called great nation. It's not like we haven't witnessed or lived through this before, but when America finally seemed to understand what true social progression means one can assume it will all come to a screeching halt. When Obama was elected for his second term I was told that it was all but a sure thing that we would then have our first female elect President in Hillary Clinton. I mean the stars were aligned, not only did Obama survive two terms as Commander in Chief, but he helped guide America into Federal legalized same sex marriage. Stocks rose to the highest they have ever been and he helped reduce the annual deficit he inherited in six years. On top of that he created 14 million jobs in a record 70 month stretch of uninterrupted job growth, there was no way that America and it's people would then catapult itself backwards... boy were we wrong.
We underestimated White America yet again, the same America that intentionally created a War on Drugs to persecute and kill our Black Leaders during the Panther Movement. The same America who intentionally bombed the prodigious Black men and women of Tulsa Oklahoma. The same America that incarcerated over two million Black men for non violent drug offenses. The exact SAME America who called our President a "Halfrican" for his biracial status, or most recently called our beautiful First Lady an "ape in heels". WE the American people had faith in a system that has constantly marginalized, raped, divided, murders, and prosecutes US without a blink of an eye and somehow believed THIS America would make the right choice. This America has always been Trump's America and we fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
Now we are faced with the challenge to finally let go of what divides us, sex, creed, religion and come together as ONE true nation under the eyes of our gods, goddesses, or godless. The only fight we have in Trump's America is the fight to survive and to finally win.
