Better Franchise: Beverly Hills Cop or Bad Boys? by @MykeDSOM
The more I watch Beverly Hills Cop and Bad Boys, the more I start thinking these franchises are underappreciated for what they are, great fucking fun action movies. Beverly Hills Cop stars Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a wise cracking detective in Detroit that goes by his own rules, Bad Boys stars Will Smith & Martin Lawrence as Mike Lowry & Marcus Burnett, also 2 undercover detectives that break the rules and argue all the time. What makes both of these franchises great but interesting is they're both produced by Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer (excluding Beverly Hills Cop 3), which makes it quality action so let's get to it.
Beverly Hills Cop: Eddie Murphy goes undercover which starts as a bust gone bad in Detroit and constantly gets yelled at by his boss Inspector Todd, when he goes back to his apartment, Foley finds a old friend by the name of Mikey who was working in Beverly Hills at art museum, both go out for a couple drinks, arrives back at Axel's apartment then is ambushed by 2 men, Mikey is killed. Axel who never listens to Todd tells him he has vacation time and he's going to use it, like the smart ass he is, he goes out west to Beverly Hills to solve the crime with the help of 2 Beverly Hills detectives who go strictly by the book, Taggart who stresses and complains all the time and Rosewood who's cool but fearless on the job. BHC might be your typical cop/action movie but it's that makes it fun, it isn't trying to force you to laugh (cause everyone and almost everything is hilarious in this movie), nothing is over the top action wise, and the movie takes you on a mission. From the signature theme music, the nonstop swearing and the "banana in the tailpipe" scene, Beverly Hills Cop is a classic and is kind of what set Eddie Murphy's film career off.
Beverly Hills Cop 2: Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley again, after Taggart and Rosewood's boss Lieutenant Bogomil is shot by some sort of Alphabet Bandit who leaves letters and riddles after every crime, Axel goes back to Beverly Hills to help Rosewood and Taggart. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is a big step from its predecessor but it's keeps the same feeling and uses the same elements even with a different director as it should and not to mention Rosewood completely turns insane with the guns in this movie. The funny part about these movies are you don't know which one is better but I think 2 has the edge, but that's what makes it so great, and we'll get to the terrible BHC 3 later.
Bad Boys: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as detective Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett. This movie takes place only in Miami after a $100 million dollar heroin heist at a police station goes down, Marcus and Mike have 4 to get it back. After a friend of Mike's is gunned down at a hotel, Mike tries to find her killer by himself and that's where it gets interesting. Marcus lies to a witness and says he's Mike Lowry in order to make her cooperate. When their Captain Howard finds out about the witness, Marcus and Mike have to switch identities for a week just to solve the case. Bad Boys kind of has the same feeling as Beverly Hills Cop 1, the comedy and action is there, a lot of people say Independence Day is what sparked Will's career but I think Bad Boys did. Martin was on top of the game while doing this movie, he had the successful TV show running and other things movies out. The chemistry between Will & Martin is excellent, when it's time to do some cop work both are down for the action, even with a little help of 2 other detectives who crack jokes back and forth with them, the best thing about this movie there was literally no script and about 85% of it was improv, from Mike & Marcus arguing over fries being wasted in Mike's car to Marcus nagging in Mike's ear nonstop.
Bad Boys 2: Will and Martin are back in probably the most over-the-top action cop movie, with this time still taking place in Miami and the last act in Cuba, Marcus and Mike are apart of the TNT (tactical narcotics team). This time they have to go undercover to stop a notorious ecstasy dealer by the name of Johnny Tapia, when Marcus's sister Sid played by Gabrielle Union lies to Marcus and finds out she's doing more than pushing papers for the DEA, Mike and Marcus both have catch Tapia and save Sid. I've never seen a sequel to a movie take it to the next level with action, both 1 & 2 are directed by Michael Bay and he's the perfect director for this franchise, with Mike being the indestructible supercop the only minor issue I had was the "woosah" thing and Marcus quite wasn't like he was in 1, but with the hilarious jokes and arguing, the greatest highway chase scene you'll probably ever see for now, the Haitian shootout with the 360 camera etc. you'll get pass that the Marcus issues quick. Is it better than the first? I believe it is.
So what's the better franchise right now, Beverly Hills Cop or Bad Boys? I gotta roll with Bad Boys, Michael Bay did excellent work and made that franchise what it is today, even as Jerry Bruckheimer as producers of both BB and BHC I enjoy BB more. As for the future of both franchises Sony already has 2017 and 2019 release dates set for Bad Boys 3 & 4, but there has been a change to who will helm the project, Michael Bay will not return to direct BB3. In a recent interview Bay says "pretty soon it's gonna be Bad Old Boys that they're taking too long to get a script", even though he would love to do it but they need a script already, and he's right, to be honest it's been since 2003, we we suppose to be on Bad Boys 7 right now, us die-hard fans deserve that but it's whatever. Will Smith is now on board as a producer with Jerry Bruckheimer and now they're trying to take the franchise starting in Miami then somewhere else, which is cool, Will has also said they're about 85% close to pre-production/principal photography, hopefully that starts in the Spring or Summer. This is the Will Smith people also want to see on the big screen aside from a villain or anti-hero in the upcoming Suicide Squad. So then who's directing? With Bay out, a director by the name of Joe Carnahan is directing and writing Bad Boys 3, Joe has some great work in TV with The Blacklist and has done great work in film with the cult classic Smokin Aces, Narc, The A-Team, The Grey and recently Stretch, so the man knows his action, I'm a little skeptical cause I'm gonna miss Bay's 360 camera visual, military action and explosion sequences but I believe Joe will bring the franchise to new heights, it will be crazy if Carnahan and Bay collaborate for Bad Boys 4 and end this series with a bang, that would be epic. As far as Beverly Hills Cop, the third movie was terrible and I think Bruckheimer not producing it was the issue, Eddie Murphy and Jerry Bruckheimer has made it clear they also have to get a script right, a BHC TV pilot was bought by CBS but it was cancelled before it could even air, but with the good reviews at the studio, a movie was granted the green light. BHC4 was suppose to release this year so hopefully we'll hear some good news soon, until then let's hope we continue to get more good movies out of both franchises in the future.
