Retail HELL: Surviving Work During The Holidays by @MykeDSOM
This is just something quick, random and hopefully some therapy reading to all my people struggling working the crazy holiday hours, especially in retail. We know how it gets, when November 1st hits that's when you start thinking "damn 2 more weeks up until January 1st it's gonna be hell", and you know what it really is, the anticipation is horrifying but that's the pros and cons of retail during the holidays, you get flooded with hours but you also have to deal with some coworkers that think they can talk to you anyway they want and you don't know what you're doing without getting chin checked, (I'm not having that shit at all), bullshit customers trying to get over on you to change prices, asking you "do you work here?", when they clearly see the nametag around your damn neck, or having a shopping cart filled with $300 worth of clothes. The managers are also full of shit, well some of em are cool but you can't trust them still, if your store is just as shitty as mines, there is no real lead, store manager, nothing, just people that get called for approvals and when registers need change. Working Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Christmas Eve is no joke, especially if you dealing with personal issues, it's days where you have to close at midnight which is fucking stress, then when it's all over you feel like you have a serious injury coming along, back problems, dehydration, feet hurting, fatigued out, it all feels like slavery, fuck that it is, hell you're better off running 7 games of full court basketball. There is no happy ending with this retail shit though, because after New Years wraps up, you're back into what I call "The Real Reality", that's when your hours gets cut back to normal, you go from 40+ hours to 15-20, or it gets worse, your store could be so fucking cheap and don't want to pay or hire anybody they can easily have you working 1-2 or if you get lucky 3 days a week, it's all bullshit but it's a job you need or you'll have nothing. Only thing cool about this shit is you'll have people you can be cool with at your job but you still have to keep your eyes and ears close to everything.
The million-dollar question is do we want to do this forever? Hell fucking no! Listen to the sample of contemporary philosopher Alan Watts from the seminar “Do You Do It, or Does It Do You?” on Logic's The Incredible True Story album, he simply says "You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing, which is stupid! It is absolutely stupid! Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way. And after all, if you do really like what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what it is – somebody is interested in everything, anything you can be interested in, you will find others will". And I completely understand that, except maybe the short life but I get it.
Overall everything is just fucking frustrating and I can't wait for the day where I can actually say this rare quote from 1 of the greatest - Jay Z "I Will Never Have Another Job Again", yes it's a rare quote but ever since I read that a couple years back it's been stuck in my head, and I'm just counting down the days.
